Materials Technology

MegaDiamond designs, manufactures and markets a broad variety of advanced ultra-hard materials for use in physically and technically demanding applications. The cornerstone to our success is a solid foundation in the material sciences. We are an industry leader in understanding and applying new materials and processing techniques to provide the highest quality and best performing polycrystalline ultra-hard products to our customers.

MegaDiamond specializes in polycrystalline ultra-hard products for the petroleum drilling, mining, construction, and cutting tool industries. Polycrystalline diamond (“PCD”) is used in rock drilling cutters and crushing inserts as well as in cutting tools for machining aluminum and non-ferrous metals and non-metals such as advanced composites, wood, ceramics, and plastics. Polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (“PCBN”) is used for fabricating cutting tools for machining ferrous metals such as hardened steel, cast iron, super-alloys and sprayed-on hard facing. MegaDiamond’s PCBN also is an integral component of MegaStir Technologies’ proprietary friction stir tools used for the solid-state joining and processing of high melting temperature materials.

Industrial diamond grit was first synthesized in the 1950's. Some 20 years later, PCD was developed where diamond powder is fused together under high-pressure, high-temperature synthesis conditions forming an integrally bonded mass simultaneously bonded to a tungsten carbide substrate. PCD has the advantage of extreme hardness — approaching that of natural diamond — while also exhibiting the toughness of tungsten carbide. MegaDiamond offers numerous engineered PCD grades designed for the specific material and wear demands faced in customer applications.

Since diamond is composed of carbon, it is not generally suited for machining ferrous metals due to iron's affinity for carbon. PCBN was developed to overcome the limitations of PCD in cutting ferrous metals. PCBN products typically consist of cBN (cubic boron nitride) particles bonded together in a metallic or ceramic matrix material. MegaDiamond’s PCBN products are engineered for specific applications by varying CBN content, grain size, and matrix composition. Like PCD, these products are also sintered under high-pressure, high-temperature conditions.

With its team of scientists, researchers, and engineers, MegaDiamond continues to develop new materials and technologies to provide ultra-hard products with ever-increasing performance and reliability. Our materials laboratory provides the tools necessary for controlling raw materials, analyzing compositions, and evaluating material properties. Advanced computer modeling and FEA (finite element analysis) systems assist our technical staff in designing products for maximum performance. MegaDiamond also takes advantage of its close proximity to three major universities, working in partnership with them in research and development activities.

Performance testing is an integral part of our product development process. In MegaDiamond's well-equipped test lab, engineers evaluate product performance in a variety of functional tests, simulating real-world application conditions. Data gathered in the test lab support the iterative design cycle culminating in new and innovative ultra-hard products.

MegaDiamond's materials technology base is the result of forty years of technical expertise in the superabrasives industry coupled with advanced testing and analytical equipment and dedicated people. These elements combine to bring the most advanced ultra-hard products to the industry.
